People skills are not enough, if you want to be a truly effective estate agent.

If you stopped and asked people at random in the street what skills make a good estate agent’s negotiator, I would have a bet you a pound to a penny that possessing good ‘People Skills’ would come right at the top of the list, but is this enough?

No, of course it’s not.

No wonder people object to paying fees amounting to thousands of pounds to an estate agent, if a pleasant personality is all they are getting for their money.

Naturally, it is essential that if a person, male or female, is looking for a career in estate agency then they do of course need to have a likeable personality, to possess the willingness to listen more than they talk and to actually enjoy dealing with people on a one to one basis.

But in addition to the people skills, they also have to become expert in all the areas that comprise the necessary core values. If we are able to advise and help our customers we need to become proficient, if not expert, in areas such as:-

  • The conveyancing process
  • The interpretation Building Surveys effectively
  • How to negotiate in all areas that comprise the sales process
  • How to keep all parties focussed and in line with your customer’s primary objectives.

If you only get people skills from your estate agent, then save yourself a few thousand pounds and do it yourself.

However a good, experienced skilful estate agent is worth every penny of his fee, and more.
