In 1992, my wife and decided to start our own business but we didn’t want to be just another one of the 200 existing estate agents in the Bournemouth, Poole areas. After much tooing and froing we decided to start a firm of specialist estate agents; namely one that only sold bungalows and chalet bungalows. The logic behind this was perfectly sound even though our professional advisors expressed the view that we had taken leave of our senses. “Do you mean to say that if asked to sell a house you would refuse to do so?” Yes, was my reply, how can you declare yourself to be a Bungalow Specialist if you then start selling houses and flats. Anyway, being obstinate people, we stuck to our guns and rapidly earned a reputation for being THE first choice if you wanted to buy or sell a bungalow.
Now, some years later, we are celebrating our 25th anniversary. So what lessons have we learned over the past 25 years. That having the right people in the team is of paramount importance. We select staff who are accomplished sales people in any field and we train them. They will only become long term members of our sales team if they also give sufficient thought and time to providing our customers with a memorable service. This they do. The other major factor in the way that we operate our company is to always remember that it is the sellers that we represent who pay our wages and NOT the buyers. Otherwise the way is wide open for there to be many conflicts of interest. We are transparent and helpful to all our buyers but it is 100% our sellers who have our primary loyalty. To many estate agents failed to act on this eternal truth and their service is therefore less than their customers deserve.
